Prepare for the Exam

The written exam is a 5.0 hour exam consisting of 180 multiple choice questions designed to assess the knowledge and skills required to function as a certified practitioner in the field.

To help you prepare for the exam, BGC has developed resources including the Job Analysis/Exam Content Outline, Rubrics/Exam Subject Areas, Equation Sheet, Calculator Information, Sample Exam Questions and Exam FAQs.

In addition:

AIHA and ACGIH list recommended publications for studying for the exam.

Resources most often cited by previous ABIH examinees who passed the exam.

Tool to design/track your exam study plan.  Since the CIH exam is comprehensive and challenging, advance preparation is a key to success.  A current CIH developed an in-depth study plan he used to prepare for the exam.  It is provided with his permission.

AIHA Local Sections are good sources for networking and they may have study groups that are preparing for the exam.

The AIHA Students and Early Career Professionals Committee is another good resource.  This committee has a 12-Step Program for Certification, sponsors a Mentor Program and holds sessions at the annual conference (AIHce) on exam prep. Slides from this session are available in the Certification section of the Student Outreach Materials webpage.

The Prometric Prepare for Test Day link offers useful test preparation tips. The What to Expect page explains in 8 steps what you can expect at the test center to help you become more comfortable on test day. The Test Drive page details how you can perform a dry run at a test center for a minimal cost. The Test Center Regulations page provides test center procedures and regulations for candidates.
