Alternative Procedure for a CIH* Reference

The Board requires that an applicant arrange for a written reference from a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) who is familiar with the applicant's industrial hygiene work. The Board has found that CIH references are most valuable in helping Directors reach informed decisions about applicant's eligibility for the requested examination.

The CIH who is to serve as a reference need not be a member of the same industrial hygiene staff as the applicant. The CIH can be from a corporate staff, another organization, or may be a consultant. The important point is that the CIH must be familiar with the applicant's work.

There are situations, however, when an applicant cannot meet that requirement. In such cases the Board will accept three examples of an applicant's written work to aid in its evaluation.

* References from an individual holding the Canadian Registered Occupational Hygienist (ROH) or the United Kingdom Diploma of Professional Competence in Occupational Hygiene may substitute for a CIH reference.

Additional information needed

There may be situations when the Board is not able to establish, from the information submitted, the nature of an applicant's work. In such cases the Board will accept three examples of an applicant's written work to aid in its evaluation.

Procedures For Submitting Work Examples

Written work may include reports of industrial hygiene studies or investigations, internal memoranda dealing with industrial hygiene activities, written programs/procedures, or the like. In selecting work examples for submission, it is important that they be:

  1. Representative of the work experience claimed as industrial hygiene practice.
  2. Representative of the scope of the time period claimed; e.g. one should be from the beginning of the time period, one from about the middle and one should be current.
  3. Signed by the applicant or otherwise identifiable as the applicants work.
  4. Reasonably concise, but complete enough to demonstrate the information listed above.
  5. Purged of any information which the parent organization believes to be confidential, proprietary, or sensitive.

Work examples will not be returned to the applicant unless specifically requested.
