"There are many things I reflect on throughout my career thus far as an IH and the value of obtaining my certification through ABIH. While there are many experiences that I've found value in having this esteemed designation, one stands out above all the rest. That is seeing how me being a CIH encouraged younger professionals coming into the field to aspire to be an IH and their pursuit of the CIH designation.

I work in southeast Texas where the workforce is primarily blue collar in the petrochemical and refinery industries. Many students out of high school in my region attend a local junior college and pursue a popular Associate degree in Occupational Safety and Health. I (up until recently) have spent the last seven years in industrial hygiene consulting where I've hired and mentored numerous students either in or graduating from this local program. Along the way, I've been able to inspire them to pursue more advanced degree programs and/or have already received a Bachelor's level degree and are pursuing the CIH designation.

Continuing to hear more and more about the ""graying"" of our profession (and becoming older myself), it has occurred to me that I've been a pretty decent influence to local younger students and have been able to encourage them to do more with their careers. They've seen me advance through the years and gain more and more responsibility in my roles and they've seen their peers mentored by me and offered opportunities due to not only their hard work as an employee but their hard work as a student obtaining more advanced degrees and seeking the CIH designation.

I'm no hot shot CIH. I'm sure not one of the super smart technical CIHs. But, having those three letters behind my name and having the opportunity to share my experience and knowledge with the younger generation and seeing them inspired to be more (in particular IHs) is a great satisfaction to me and one I am thankful to have experienced."
