Steven Jahn, CIH

"I am really glad that I have my CIH because it allowed my eligibility for initial hiring and later promotion into management. My pursuit of certification occurred after 10 years of field work. When I earned it in comprehensive practice, the CEO of my consulting firm handed me a $3000 bonus. Embarrassed with the gift, I offered that the exam demonstrated how little I really knew. "The value in your certification intrinsically," he said, "is that you recognize you don't know the answer, but have the capacity to pursue one." So why the bonus if the value is to me? "Because I just doubled your billing rate."

I subsequently moved to a new assignment in a large organization (>10,000 employee). I set my goal once there to be in charge of the IH program within seven years. At that mark, the job opened up for Manager of IH, with a requirement that the applicant be a CIH. I won the job with people appreciative of my work ethic, and beat out two better qualified candidates from outside the organization. That change in my career earned significant dollars for me, and afforded me the opportunity to influence governance in the company, and regulatory influence with our government regulator/customer. I find myself potentially looking at a job change for factors beyond my control, and anticipate that doors will open from both my continuing maintenance of certification credentials, and those experiences previously afforded solely thru certification by ABIH."
