October 2002 Board Report |
During the September 28-29, 2002 meeting, the following major issues were discussed, finalized and/or voted on by the Directors:
|
At the conclusion of the next Board meeting in March 2003, the following six newly elected Directors will take office.
Wilfrid "Buck" Cameron, CIH
Barbara Dawson, CIH, CSP
Alice Greife, PhD, CIH
Faye Grimsley, PhD, CIH
Peter Lees, PhD, CIH
Delight "Dee" Woodhull, CIH, CSP The Board’s current Public Member, Philip Stern, Colorado Project/TIP, Inc., Allenspark, CO, was elected to a second two year term. |
Also, from the current Directors, the following officers have been elected to take office at the conclusion of the March 2003 meeting:
|
The following proposed changes reported in the April 2002 ABIH News were accepted at the September Board Meeting and will take effect January 1, 2003:
Hardships - In those rare cases of catastrophic illness or other long-term disability that cannot be accommodated by the proposed changes, Diplomates may still request consideration from the Board if maintenance of certification becomes difficult or impossible. Such requests will be considered by the CM Committee on case-by-case basis. Diplomates desiring such consideration should notify the CM Committee Chair as soon as it is known that the need exists (i.e., do NOT wait until the end of the cycle). Requests, which will be held in strict confidence, should be in writing and include a brief description of the illness or disability and an estimate of the expected duration, if known.
Unemployment - Diplomates who become involuntarily unemployed and unable to maintain certification should immediately notify the CM Committee Chair in writing. The request should include a Recertification Worksheet showing the Diplomate’s maintenance activities to date. The Committee will consider requests for an extension of the CM cycle on a case-by-case basis, taking into consideration several factors, including timeliness of notification, total points accumulated to date, likelihood that sufficient points can be obtained in the time remaining in the cycle and expected duration of unemployment. Diplomates who submit a deficient CM Worksheet after their cycle ends will not be considered for retroactive consideration.
Retired Status - Only Diplomates who have retired from the full-time or part-time practice of Industrial Hygiene will be eligible for "Retired" status, thus relieving them of any further obligation to pay dues or accumulate CM points. Those Diplomates who continue to practice will be expected to fulfill all requirements to maintain their certification in good standing. The term "Inactive" will no longer be used. The Committee believes that this change is necessary to maintain the integrity of the certification process and to ensure that practicing Diplomates are maintaining currency in the state-of-the-art of the profession. Diplomates who continue to practice, either full time or part time, but elect not to pay dues and/or submit a satisfactory recertification worksheet when due will be subject to existing Board policy concerning revocation of Certification.
Point Changes
Point changes that will also take effect the take effect January 1, 2003 are:
Mentoring
Several organizations, including the Academy of Industrial Hygiene, have requested that the CM Committee provide points to Diplomates participating in formal mentoring programs. The Committee invites comments on its draft proposal for recognizing mentoring programs. To receive points, a formal mentoring program must provide for:
The program must be pre-approved by ABIH in order for participating Diplomates to receive points. An approved process must include:
If approved, a Diplomate could claim 1 CM point for mentoring and .5 point for field work involving at least 3 hours of the mentor’s participation. Up to 5 points/5 year cycle could be claimed in Category 7, Other Activities.
Those wishing to comment should contact ABIH by March 1, 2003. The Board’s address, fax and email are provided on the front page.
1996-2001 CM Cycle
The following CIHs did not successfully complete the Certification Maintenance process. The Board voted that their certifications have expired.

At its meeting on 28-29 September, the Qualifications Committee proposed that an applicant who has a bachelors degree which does not meet the required science content could receive credit for work experience accumulated prior to the time when the degree is rectified. This would allow the committee to consider crediting professional level IH practice that happened concurrently with taking academic courses to rectify the degree.
comment received by March 1, 2003 will be considered by the committee prior to the Directors considering this proposal for approval at the March 22-23 Board meeting.
The Board is proposing that the requirements for authorized use of CIH/CAIH be successfully completing the Certification Maintenance process every five years and payment of the annual renewal fee. This would mean that Diplomates whose current years renewal fees are not paid by March 1st would lose the right to use the ABIH designations. Diplomates whose certification has not expired could reinstate by paying back renewal and reinstatement fees. Those wishing to comment should reply by March 1, 2003. If approved at the 22-23 March Board meeting, it would affect Diplomates paying 2004 renewal fees.
CM Course Approval Numbers |
CIHs/CAIHs can now find CM course approval numbers at the ABIH website (www.abih.org). After entering the ABIH website, click on Certification Maintenance, then CM Course Database Search. Approval numbers can be located by searching for the course name, sponsor, date, city or state.
Remember, the AIHCE, PCIH and their approved PDCs, regulatory driven asbestos, hazardous waste and lead courses do not require approval numbers. Thanks to the ABIH Webmaster, Ed Bartosh, for making this search possible.
"Lost" CIHs |
"Lost" CIHsThe following individuals are due to report for certification maintenance by February 1, 2003, but we have been unable to locate them. We have listed last known employer and state.
If you know where these CIHs are, please write, call, fax or e-mail us with their current locations. |
PCIH |
The Academy is already planning for next year’s Professional Conference on Industrial Hygiene in Rancho Mirage, CA near Palm Springs. PDCs will be held over the weekend of September 13-14, followed by two days of general sessions, current topic workshops and exhibits. An AIHA sponsored Exposure Assessment Symposium will immediately precede the PCIH Thursday through Saturday, September 11-13.
Importance of a Reference Letter |
The ABIH certifies Industrial Hygiene professionals based on three critical factors - educational background, work experience and examination results. Attesting to an Applicant’s work experience, providing a confidential, written reference which the ABIH will count on to make a reasoned decision about the Applicant, is serious business.
For those not familiar with reference requirements, the following outlines key features (all of which are clearly laid out in the ABIH Professional Reference Questionnaire):
Applicants who sit for the exam are required to have at least two references which help the ABIH discern the Applicant’s "professional level" work experience. One of the references must be provided by a CIH familiar with the Applicant’s work, with other reference(s) provided by the applicant’s supervisor(s). If the Applicant is a consultant, references from principle clients are required, with the distinct possibility that example work products may also need to be provided. The majority of any work product needs to have been developed by the Applicant, as opposed to the Applicant simply contributing a minor segment to the overall deliverable.
A CIH reference may be generated by a CIH, an individual holding the Canadian Registered Occupational Hygienist (ROH), or an individual holding the United Kingdom Diploma of Professional Competence in Occupational Hygiene who is familiar with the Applicant’s work experience.
References will not be accepted from a relative or spouse of an applicant, a person whom the Applicant supervises, or a current ABIH Board member.
Reference letters need to verify two criteria.
The first criteria requires that the Applicant’s experience be recognized as professional level and include aspects of independence of actions (in planning, self direction, decision-making and autonomy); depth of work requirements (data gathering, analysis and interpretation); level of interaction (degree to which the individual interacts with a broad spectrum of contacts, including decision makers); and responsibility for work outcome (accuracy and extent to which the Applicant is personally held accountable for his/her work and decisions).
The second criteria addresses whether the experience is broad scope, with the following three dimensions-work function (anticipation, recognition, evaluation, control and program management); stressor category (experience in at least two of four categories-chemical, biological, physical and ergonomic); and work environment (experience within several work environments or narrow scope where work is performed primarily in a single rubric area or with a single stressor).
Given the importance of competency in this practice, submittal of references that fully address the criteria for professional level and scope of practice is critical.
Not Certified |
In Response to inquiries, the American Board of Industrial Hygiene reports that the following individuals have never been certified by the Board and are not authorized to use the designations Certified Industrial Hygienist/CIH, Certified Associate Industrial Hygienist/CAIH or Industrial Hygienist In Training/IHIT.
Mr. Rothwell was certified by the Board in 1993 as a CIH. He failed to maintain his certification and was notified in November 2000 that his certification had expired. He is no longer eligible to use the designations Certified Industrial Hygienist and CIH. |
