On February 22, 2008, the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH) signed an Alliance agreement with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to promote professionalism and the value of achieving certification. The Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) and the Council on Certification of Health, Environmental and Safety Technologists (CCHEST) are also partners in the Alliance.
“Protecting the health and safety of workers is not only the responsible thing to do, it’s also a proven success factor in today’s business,” said ABIH Chair, Scott E. Merkle, CIH. ”Through this alliance, OSHA further recognizes the value of the Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) designation that ABIH offers and commits, along with the other alliance partners, to enhance professional education, raise operational expertise and promote the value of certification.”
OSHA, ABIH, BCSP and CCHEST will provide information, guidance and access to training resources regarding the value of safety and health professionalism and accredited certifications. Through the Alliance, the organizations will use their collective expertise to help enhance safety professionals’ and industrial hygienists’ education and professional expertise and promote the value of increasing safety and IH competency in the workplace.
“Assuring the safety and health of working men and women are the foundations of our respective organizations,“ said Assistant Secretary of Labor for OSHA Edwin G. Foulke, Jr. “OSHA is pleased to join with BCSP, CCHEST, and ABIH as we collaborate to develop products, programs and resources that will advance safety and industrial hygiene competency in the workplace.” In addition, the Alliance will produce materials and programs that promote the benefits of achieving safety and health certifications. Alliance representatives will collaborate to distribute information to employers and employees through print and electronic media, conferences, meetings and other events.
OSHA's mission is to assure the safety and health of America's workers by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach, and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual improvement in workplace safety and health. For more information, visit www.osha.gov.
