If previous ABIH approval information is readily available, the Diplomate can but is not required to use it. However, to use the previous ABIH approval, the Diplomate must have personally participated in the event.
The Diplomate determines the technical contact hours aligned to at least one CM Area of IH, Safety, IH Ethics, or Management. The event must be targeted to the professional level (not technician level), and advance the IH's technical knowledge/skills.
If using an older worksheet which accepts only CM points (not hours), the Diplomate-Calculated hours can be converted to points at a rate of 0.167 points per hour.

Technical Contact Hours
|
Must be a minimum of 1 hour (60 minutes). Exception: ethics courses can be less than 1 hour. 1. Exact, e.g. 75 minutes = 1.25 hours 2. Estimated - using the average hours per half day, e.g., 2.5 hrs/half day X 6 half days = 15 hours 3. Rounded down but not up, e.g. 95 minutes = 1.5 hrs Includes but is not limited to presentations, lectures, break outs, Q&A, exams, event overview, event recaps, and discussions. |

ABIH Diplomates are required to attend educational events but the Diplomate, not ABIH, will calculate the CM credit for an event. CM credit claimed by Diplomates is based on technical contact hours aligned to the topics related to IH, safety or ethics. Only the technical portions of an event are credited. See the CM credit calculation method above to better understand technical vs. non-technical content.
1. Suggested Language for Event Advertising
Event Providers or Sponsors are not obligated to communicate the CM credit for an educational event. However, doing so makes the event more attractive to ABIH Diplomates.
Providers should communicate their events in terms of technical contact hours or CEUs (if using the IACET system). ABIH suggests the language below for event communication purposes.
Event Providers must not imply that ABIH has approved or endorsed an event.
| Previously awarded CM credit by ABIH | Hours Known? | Suggested Language |
| No | Yes | This event contains XX hours and may be eligible for ABIH CM credit. See ABIH web site for CM credit criteria. |
| ------ | No | This event may be eligible for ABIH CM credit. See the ABIH web site CM credit criteria. |
| Yes ^ * | Yes | ABIH has previously awarded CM credit for this event. The current event contains XX hours which can be claimed for CM credit. |
| ------ | No | ABIH has previously awarded CM credit for this event. The current event can be claimed for CM credit. |
| ^ Previous ABIH reviews are still valid as long as the CM# End Date has not expired. These events will remain in the online ABIH database. * Events previously approved for Management CM credit most likely are no longer eligible. |

Advertising an event to ABIH Diplomates can dramatically increase its visibility and maximize the participation rates.
An ABIH list rental allows you to reach thousands of CIHs, or it can be customized to target audiences.
