CM Credit for Educational Events
- CM Credit Calculation Method
- Educational Event Sponsors/Providers - Promotional Language & List Rentals
For educational events completed prior to 2012, the Diplomate may use the previous ABIH approval information or the Diplomate-Calculated method (below).
This method can be used for an educational event completed during the cycle that is targeted to the professional level (not technician level) and advances the person’s technical knowledge/skill.
CM credit is claimed at a rate of 0.167 CM point per hour of technical content in the CM Areas of IH, Safety, or IH Ethics. The event must have at least one hour of technical content, except for ethics, which can be any length.
Technical Contact Hours
Includes technical portions such as presentations, lectures, break outs, Q&A, exams, event overview, event recaps, and discussions.
Excludes the non-technical portions such as generic welcome speeches, participant introductions, breaks, meals, networking, exhibitor time, roundtables or discussions with unspecified topics, social tours
Courses: Use the technical contact hours as reported by the course Sponsor, regardless of the actual time it takes to complete the course. Some Sponsors use CEUs where 1 CEU = 10 contact hours.
Conferences: Technical contact hours are based on the Diplomate's participation in the technical sessions. This is often less than the maximum possible time as reported by the Sponsor. The Diplomate may choose to track their individual session attendance or use an estimate of the average hours per half day for their days of attendance.
If the contact hours are not reported by the Sponsor, the Diplomate will need to caclulate the hours from an agenda or schedle. Contact time can be;
Academic courses receive 2.5 CM points (15 hours) per academic semester credit-hour, or 1.67 CM point (10 hours) per academic quarter-hour.
Claiming CM credit
CM credit is claimed at a rate of 0.167 point per hour (1 CM point = 6 hours) in at least one of the CM Areas (IH, Safety or IH Ethics).
EX: An 8 hour respiratory protection class can be claimed for 1.34 IH points. A 30 minute Code-of-Conduct class can be claimed for 0.08 IH Ethics points.
If an event has technical content in more than one CM Area, the Diplomate may:
EX: An 8 hour PDC is 75% IH and 25% ethics. This could be claimed as either:

ABIH® Diplomates are required to attend educational events but the Diplomate, not ABIH, will calculate the CM credit for an event. CM credit claimed by Diplomates is based on technical contact hours aligned to the topics related to IH, safety or ethics. Only the technical portions of an event are credited. See the CM credit calculation method above to better understand technical vs. non-technical content.
Event Providers or Sponsors are not obligated to communicate the CM credit for an educational event; however, doing so makes the event more attractive to ABIH Diplomates.
Providers should communicate their events in terms of technical contact hours or CEUs (if using the IACET system). Event Providers must not imply that ABIH has approved or endorsed an event.
If ABIH has previously awarded* CM credit for your event OR if your event clearly has subject matter that is IH, Safety or Ethics related and meets the minimum time requirements above, ABIH suggests the following language for your event advertising.
"ABIH® Diplomates can claim CM credit for this event. See http://www.abih.org/maintain-certification/cm-credit-education-events for more information."
If the technical contact hours are known, then some additional detail will be helpful:
"ABIH® Diplomates can claim up to XX technical contact hours of CM credit for this event. See http://www.abih.org/maintain-certification/cm-credit-education-events for more information."
*Note that events previously awarded "Management" CM credit are no longer eligible in the ABIH system.
For questions or help, contact ABIH at firstname.lastname@example.org or 517-321-2638.
Advertising an event to ABIH® Diplomates can dramatically increase its visibility and maximize the participation rates.
An ABIH list rental allows you to reach thousands of CIHs, or it can be customized to target audiences.
